Hamilton County Radio Update

HAMILTONMONTohio-angleHamilton County and Cincinnati have been working on a long project to replace their 800MHz systems with updated technology, and to attach the new system to BRICS and MARCS. They switched their users over last week.

Their project affects our users because the Hamilton County talkgroups in our police and fire radios need to be replaced with Hamilton County’s new talkgroups. BRICS has been prepping for this change and is currently reprogramming radios at fire departments bordering Hamilton County first. Over the next several months, all radios in the county will need to be reprogrammed. Montgomery County is going through a similar upgrade in the next month or two, so BRICS will be swapping out the Montgomery talkgroups for new ones as well.

By the end of the day tomorrow (August 3 2016), every southern-border fire department will be reprogrammed and equipped with Hamilton County’s new talkgroups. BRICS staff will continue to contact agencies to schedule programming throughout the rest of the county in the weeks following.

Butler County Light & Air Truck

The Butler County Emergency Management Agency asked us to share this information with BRICS users:

The Air and Light truck, a county asset previously hosted by the Hanover Township Fire Department, moved to the Ross Township Fire Department yesterday.

The unit designation, often previously referred to as Light & Air 181, is now Light & Air 1, or LA1 in CAD, on MDTs and in alpha paging.

Known Issue: Interference on Talkgroups

Interference is something that happens with radio systems, and it will never be a problem that can be checked off as completely solved. It’s more of a game of whack-a-mole – as repeat issues come up, they need to be tracked down to a source. We posted about this recently and had some success preventing the interference that plagued us in the summer and fall.

In the last two weeks, we’ve had several occurrences of what some might call “bleed over” that appears to be All-County Broadcasts (ACBs) originating from Cincinnati or other Hamilton County dispatch centers.

It is only happening in a “perfect storm” scenario, when they’re making an ACB and we have legitimate Butler County radio traffic with a talkgroup assigned to a particular channel. The ACB is hopping on the tail end of the legitimate Butler County transmission.

Here is an example audio file:

In short, BRICS staff and Motorola are working on finding the reason this is happening and a resolution. We just wanted to let you know that we’re aware of it.

If you have an occurrence, contact BRICS with a support ticket or email with the specific date, time and talkgroup affected.
